Running to Huchuy Qosqo

Some runs stay with you long after they’re finished. The Huchuy Qosqo Day Run is one of those routes. Starting high above Cusco, this 20km trail adventure follows ancient Inca pathways across high Andean landscapes before arriving at one of the Sacred Valley’s most impressive — and least visited — archaeological sites.

For runners looking to combine history, adventure, and breathtaking mountain scenery, this route is one of the best day experiences in the region.

Running Ancient Paths of the Inca

Running along original Incan trails

The route begins with an early morning departure from Cusco, climbing quickly into the quiet landscapes above the ruins of Tambomachay. Within a short time, you find yourself far from the noise of the city, with open highland terrain where llamas graze and small farming communities continue traditions that have existed for centuries. The first several kilometres will either be slowly jogged or walked as we make the pass.

From here, the trail joins sections of ancient Inca paths, once used by the chasquis — the legendary runners of the Inca Empire who carried messages between distant cities. Running these same trails today gives a powerful sense of connection to the past.

The terrain is constantly changing. You’ll move across rolling puna grasslands, narrow stone paths, and high ridgelines where the views suddenly open across the entire Sacred Valley. On clear days you can see dramatic layers of mountains stretching far into the Andes.

A Hidden Inca City Above the Sacred Valley

The highlight of the route is the arrival at Huchuy Qosqo, a remarkable Inca archaeological site perched high above the valley.

Often overshadowed by more famous destinations like Machu Picchu, Huchuy Qosqo remains relatively quiet — which makes the experience even more special. Terraces cascade down the hillside, ancient stone buildings still stand proudly against the mountain backdrop, and the views across the valley are spectacular.

Descending into the Sacred Valley

From the ruins, the route continues with a steep descent into the Sacred Valley below finishing in the town of Lamay. From here we will travel back to Cusco/
