If you’re looking for the perfect introduction to running in Cusco, this route offers an unforgettable way to experience the landscapes, history, and quiet trails that surround the city.

Just a short distance above Cusco lies a network of ancient paths, rolling hills, and hidden ruins that most visitors never see. This gentle 9km trail run follows some of these routes, offering incredible views, fascinating history, and a relaxed way to explore the Andes.

More than just a run, it’s an experience that connects you with the landscape and history of Cusco.

A Perfect Introduction to Trail Running in Cusco

Running at 3,400 meters above sea level can be challenging, which is why this route has been designed as a comfortable and enjoyable introduction to trail running in the Andes.

The run begins just above the city and follows smooth trails that are mostly flat or gently downhill, making it ideal for those adjusting to altitude or looking for a scenic, relaxed run.

Rather than focusing on speed or pace, the emphasis is on enjoying the surroundings and discovering the incredible scenery just beyond Cusco.

Running Through History

One of the highlights of running in Cusco is the deep connection between the landscape and its history.

Along this route you’ll pass ancient Incan ruins and historic pathways, reminders of the vast network of trails that once connected the Inca Empire. These routes were used for centuries by messengers, travelers, and local communities moving through the mountains.

Today, many of these paths remain beautifully preserved and offer some of the most scenic running routes in the region.

Running here feels like stepping back into history.

Incredible Views Above Cusco

As the trail winds through the countryside above the city, runners are rewarded with panoramic views of Cusco and the surrounding mountains.

The open landscapes, rolling hills, and peaceful farmland create a completely different atmosphere from the busy streets below. It’s common to pass grazing animals, small farms, and quiet paths that feel far removed from the tourist crowds.

This is one of the reasons why running in Cusco is such a special experience—the trails quickly lead you into peaceful landscapes that most visitors never discover.

A Scenic Finish in San Blas

After enjoying the trails above the city, the route gradually descends toward Cusco, finishing in San Blas, the city’s historic artisan neighborhood.

Known for its narrow streets, small galleries, and vibrant atmosphere, San Blas is one of the most charming parts of the city.

To end the run, we stop at San Blas Market for a refreshing natural juice—a simple but perfect way to finish a morning exploring the trails around Cusco.

A Different Way to Experience Cusco

Many visitors explore Cusco through guided tours or visits to famous archaeological sites. But running in Cusco offers a completely different perspective.

It allows you to move through the landscape, discover hidden paths, and see parts of the Andes that are difficult to access otherwise.

This 9km route is a great reminder that sometimes the best way to explore a place is simply by putting on a pair of running shoes and heading out onto the trail.
